friends forever |
 |
You’ve probably seen them if you’ve visited our shelter. A
group of tireless women who volunteer, often behind the scenes, to
support the Nebraska Humane Society. Wearing yellow aprons they
guide tours, organize fundraising, and work to make projects like our Pet Adoption
On Wheels, and our lobby Gift Shop, a reality. They
believe passionately in the mission of the Nebraska Humane Society. They
are our “Friends Forever.”
The Mission of Friends Forever is to promote
the general welfare of companion animals and to enhance the bond
of caring between companion animals and humans. Friends Forever
supports the Nebraska Humane Society by making life better for companion
animals through fundraising, public education and awareness.
Organizing events and making money—these ladies know how to
do both. They are the first to lend a hand and open a pocketbook,
but their real strength is getting others to help out too!
A Few Fundraising Highlights
Black Tie and Tails:
Talk about
puttin’on the dog! This fashion
show that showcases community leaders escorting shelter dogs is wrapped
up in a glamorous gala complete with dinner, entertainment and
an auction. As a bi-annual event Black Tie and Tails has
become our biggest fundraiser, and the ladies of Friends Forever do
it all.
Friends for Life Calendar, and Pet Photo Contest:
Give
pet owners a chance to show off their pets and they will! Friends
Forever announced they were producing a calendar featuring local pets
and the photos poured in. The contest decided 16 winners who
were featured on the covers and as pets of the month, with all other
photos tucked in as well. They had so many photos, they had to make
the Friends For Life Calendar bigger! The big
winners were the shelter animals who benefited from the thousands of
dollars the calendar raised.
A Few Project Highlights
The PAW (Pet Adoption On Wheels) Mobile Adoption Unit
Friends
Forever spearheaded the original funding for the Mobile Adoption Vehicle by
gaining sponsorships from Corporations and then they sold kennel
sponsorships within the vehicle . More than ten years
later the PAW is a recognizable symbol of the shelter and has adopted
hundreds of deserving pets to loving homes.
The Gift Shop
How do you make sure adopters
are ready for pets? By making
sure they have access to the best supplies, behavior aids, and equipment
around. Friends Forever sponsored the space for the gift shop
in the Lied Humane Center. Since its opening the shop has raised
thousands of dollars to help care for and place homeless pets.
Docent Tours
These ladies don’t just raise money—they raise awareness
by running the Nebraska Humane Society’s tour program. Book a
tour and you’ll meet a “Friend” plus gain valuable
insight into what the shelter faces on a day to day basis.
The “Little Things” That
Make A Big Difference
From doggie shampoo to comfy beds for each
adoption kennel, Friends Forever knows that the little touches can
make the biggest difference if you’re a dog away from home. Often their membership pledges
and fundraising efforts allow money to be put where it’s most
needed. New computers to help track lost pets, surgical supplies
and pain patches to minimize suffering, cameras for cruelty investigators to
better document cases: these are just a few of the areas
Friends Forever has supported.
