The Nebraska Humane Society is dedicated to finding a good home for every animal in our adoption program. We take care to find out lifestyles of potential pet owners in order to best match people with pets. We work to educate people on choosing a companion animal because we often see, first hand, the results of matches that don’t work out. All animals that come into the shelter are temperament tested for adoptability. Once in the adoption program dogs and cats are spayed or neutered, microchipped and given their first series of shots. Gone are the days of time limits for animals. Once an animal is in the adoption program at the Nebraska Humane Society –it is here until it is adopted. While waiting for the perfect family, staff and volunteers work with many of our younger or untrained animals to teach basic obedience commands and manners. Some longer-term animals have even gone through our basic obedience class and graduated! We know that a well trained dog is easier to adopt out and easier for a family to live with! To allow more people to see our adoption animals we often load ‘em up and head out! Our mobile “Pet Adoption on Wheels” is an R-V, retrofitted with kennels, which travels to festivals, fairs and events to promote responsible pet ownership. Manned by volunteer adoption counselors, the PAW allows us to reach out into the community and provide off-site adoptions.
