On a mission From Dog

My Blues story of Jake and Elwood

After playing ball in the backyard with my Lab Jake I noticed he became lethargic. We took him to the Vet the next morning. Our vet gave him fluids and an X-rays and kept him for observation. We turned and look at each other as I left the office. The house was still empty and lonely that day. Early the next morning our vet called to tell me Jake had passed. I picked up his dishes and toys and packed them. I took his unused treats and food to donate to the NE Humane Society.
My wife suggested that we look at the dogs available for adoption. I was very reluctant to adopt so soon after losing Jake. Eventually I decided he would want us to provide a good home for another dog. There was a liter of puppies and my wife and I fell in love with one of the engaged and outgoing pups. That we asked to see him in the get acquainted room. They handed me the pup and he nestled in and went to sleep in my arms immediately. I still felt an overwhelming sadness from my loss but it seemed nice to have a future to look forward to as well. The new pup slept in my arms all the way home. A day and a half later I woke from sleep and had the perfect name. "Elwood", a way to respect Jake but to recognize their differences. Elwood has been a great friend and companion for the last couple years. Jake would be proud. Elwood doesn't like to play ball but he loves tug-o-war and chewing on his Kong toy. We walk at the dog park frequently and attend classes at the NE Humane Society.
