Making Magic All Over Again

The real questions is who rescued who?

I adopted this pair of senior dogs two days ago (Oct. 1). They are so sweet and gentle. My beautiful, friendly, and all too trusting German Shepherd, Magic, died from poisoning four months ago. I still haven't confirmed the identity of the person who killed him. I was so full of grief that I retreated from everything and everyone. Yesterday would have been Magic's sixth birthday. I wanted to bring home a brand new German Shepherd puppy until I accidentally happened upon a web page with this pair.

Now my home has Magic all over again. As soon as I brought them home I let them out in my yard. They were hesitant for only a second. Then they began running and jumping for joy like ecstatic little puppies. For intermittent short bursts it was almost like watching a pair of gazelles. They rolled in the grass. Then they repeated their ode to joy dance again and again until they dropped from exhaustion. I gave them new names. Zowie is a nickname for Zauber, the German word for magic. Tana is a nickname I made up for Tanaquil. I had recently seen a documentary about Tanaquil LeClerq. She was an illustrious American ballet dancer who led a tragic life. Her name means "gift of God." It was the name of an ancient Etruscan queen. Magic. Gift of God. That sums it all up. You can scarcely imagine how overwhelming my grief and depression were. I feel it's already lifting now and I'm getting a little more sleep. The dogs sleep deeply and quietly all night long.
They will have a great home for the rest of their lives. The real questions is who rescued who?
