To the caring NHS staff and their diligent efforts to home as many animals as possible, thank you! Merry Christmas!

Nearly 7 years ago, the Nebraska Humane Society found a two-year-old tabby cat. Within a month, she and I found each other at your center. On a cold, wintery Saturday in January, my soon to be 8-year-old niece came to spend the weekend with me. Living so close to the shelter, she and I often visited to see the animals. Having never owned any pets myself, I found it quite easy to walk through and pass the time with my niece in a way which clearly made her happy. We always walked out the door with no fuss (she had a Great Pyranees at home) and I certainly felt no guilt (I wasn't an animal person). Prior to this weekend, I had a couple of friends who had been working on me to get a cat. They were witness to the attachment that was growing between me and their cats. Still, I resisted. Then this one Saturday, my niece stood at my stoop as I opened the door and said, "Aunt Laura will you get a cat today?" I melted. I remember every bit of that weekend (looking all over town for kittens, the kind police officer who gave me a warning at 120th and Center, my car engine fire, and driving back and forth to NHS). My niece chose her for me AND her name which became Trixie. "The CAT" and I struggled at first. One of your staff gave me the name of a feline behaviorist (whose name is "Kitty") who taught me the ABC's of cat behavior and gave me some tips for getting along with this particular troublemaker. It wasn't too long after that Trix and I bonded. For every moment after, she was my beloved creature and I her beloved human. This summer, I found a lump on her belly. She had surgery for mammary cancer. The biopsy results were not what we hoped for, yet we were given three more months together ... and they were GREAT months!! We said our goodbyes October 1. As a stray, we couldn't possibly know her birthday. NHS said she was two when she was found (which was December 12) so that became her birthday. So I remember Trixie in this post, and I remember our success story of which NHS was a part. To the caring NHS staff and their diligent efforts to home as many animals as possible, thank you! Merry Christmas!
