About Our Internship Program

The Nebraska Humane Society has a wonderful training opportunity in the form of an internship program. The program touches on various points of interest in the shelter, including Adoptions, Animal Care, Animal Medical and Behavior. 

The internship is an unpaid opportunity for students who are currently age 15 years or older. Due to the nature of the program, we ask that students commit to at least 10 hours of service per week for three months. Opportunities are available year round.

Each opportunity allows for students to explore areas of personal interest, while gaining real-world career skills. Each unique internship opportunity at the shelter is designed to enhance the ability to work with animals.

• A cover letter explaining credentials and career goals
• At least two references
• Your school's requirement for independent study (if applicable)

Available Internships

Adoption Department Internship 

This opportunity will expose participants to the adoptions process of shelter operations. Participation in this program will allow students to develop transferable, real-world skills in animal handling, animal behavior, and office skills. Read more details about this internship

Animal Medical Department Internship

This opportunity will expose participants to the medical processes of shelter operations. Participation in this program will allow students to develop transferable, real-world skills in the areas of animal health, surgery, animal handling, animal behavior and teamwork. Neonatal Kitten Care Internship

This opportunity will expose participants to the animal care processes of supporting orphaned kittens. Participation in this program will allow students to develop transferable, real-world skills in the areas of animal handling, animal behavior, animal health and teamwork. Animal Welfare Internship

This opportunity will expose participants to the animal care and behavior processes of shelter operations. Participation in this program will allow students to develop transferable, real-world skills in the areas of animal handling, animal behavior, animal health, behavior modification and teamwork. This opportunity will expose participants to the role of animal behavior in shelter operations.
