FAQs About Pet Licensing

How do I license my pet?

You may license your pet online, by mail, at participating vet clinics, or in person at the Nebraska Humane Society.

Do I receive a new license tag each year?

License tags issued by the Nebraska Humane Society are permanent tags.  If you have a permanent license tag for your pet, you will not receive another tag. Once all licensing requirements have been met, the permanent license tag will be validated for the year.

How do I know what rate to pay?

Please refer to the Licensing and City Laws section for your jurisdiction.  If you do not know what jurisdiction your address falls in, please contact us at licensing@nehumanesociety.org or (402) 444-6716. Please tell us your name and address, and we will verify your licensing jurisdiction.

Why do I have to pay a $1.25 state fee for each license?

The $1.25 state fee is used to fund the “State Commercial Dog and Cat Operator Inspection Program.”  All license fees in all jurisdictions must include this fee.

Is there a Senior Citizen licensing rate?

Owners of altered pets in the following jurisdictions may license their pets at no charge if they provide proof of senior status (65+):

  • Bellevue
  • Gretna
  • LaVista
  • Papillion
  • Ralston
  • Unincorporated Sarpy County
  • Springfield
  • Waterloo

Will I receive a mailed receipt if I license online?

If all conditions have been met, you will not receive a mailed receipt. You will be contacted only if additional information or documentation is required or if a new tag is issued. You will receive a receipt for your online payment by email at the completion of your online session.

Why have I not received my pet’s permanent license tag?

If your pet does not yet have a permanent license tag, the license tag more than likely was issued on a “Temporary” status pending the receipt of additional required information (e.g., proof of current rabies vaccination, proof of liability insurance, or proof of spay/neuter).  Please refer to your license receipt for additional information.  Requested documentation must be submitted within 30 days of purchasing the license.  Documentation may be submitted by email (Licensing@nehumanesociety.org), by fax (402-546-1477), or by mail:
