Can you believe the Nebraska Humane Society is 150 years old? NHS, founded in 1875, is the fifth oldest humane society in the United States, and, today, is also one of the largest. In 2025, we will be recognizing our 150-year history, celebrating today and looking toward the future. We hope you'll join us for numerous celebrations as we continue to protect, save and enrich the lives of animals in the communities we serve.
The Nebraska Humane Society’s mission started in 1875 - 150 years ago!
We are proud to be part of the Omaha community - so intertwined with the wonderful people we get to connect with on a daily basis, and all the pets who accompany us with unconditional love. We’re proud that when there’s desperation or need, Omaha steps up. When tragedy strikes, Omaha joins together. This isn’t just about today, this week or even the last year; This is about decades - lifetimes - of NHS and Omaha working together to improve the lives of our beloved pets.
This is about hundreds of thousands of adoptions making families whole. It’s about lifesaving surgeries that adopters may never even see. It’s about the second chances that every pet deserves.This is about a bag of food that keeps a pet in the family. It’s for the years of volunteering that have made our world a better place, and the years of relentless effort still to come. Heck, it’s about the Puppy Cart too!
We are so excited to share our yearlong 150th anniversary celebration with all of you. We will have events, stories, engagement opportunities, fireside chats with our CEO, photos from the archives and much more!
