Hurricane Harvey: How We're Helping

Wednesday, August 30, 2017 | NHS Staff

Like many of you, we are devastated by the images and stories coming out of Texas showing the destruction caused by Hurricane Harvey. We know many people and their pets have been displace by the storm and are in need of help. We’ve received numerous phone calls and emails from people asking how, we, here at the Nebraska Humane Society, are helping. While our shelter staff awaits specific requests from those erecting pet disaster shelters, we’ve gathered information on how the general public can provide needed items. Below you’ll find information on donation drives and wish lists from animal shelters effected by the storm.

Here’s how we’re helping our two and four-legged friends in Texas:

Crate/Collar/Leash Drive:

Emergency shelters housing evacuees want to keep pets with their people, but can only allow in pets who arrive in carriers or crates. Lots of pets are arriving cradled in their owner arms, so the shelters are requesting pet carriers, leashes and collars. To help make sure pets are not separated from their people, we are hosting a crate, collar and leash drive.

When to drop off crates, collars and leashes:

  • Thursday, August 31st from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Where:

  • The Center for Humane Education on the Nebraska Humane Society campus. NHS is located at 8929 Fort Street in Omaha. The CHE is located west of our main building.

Types of crates, collars and leashes to donate:

  • Can be gently used or new
  • Please make sure crates are clean
  • All sizes of crates, collars and leashes, for both dogs and cats will be accepted.

Additional Ways to Help:

If you don’t have a crate, collar or leash to donate, please consider helping our animal shelter friends in Texas.
