The Mission

The Nebraska Humane Society protects, saves and enriches the lives of animals in the communities we serve. We provide education, give sanctuary to animals, encourage adoptions and promote responsible pet ownership.

Featured Partner

Baxter Subaru

Animals at the Nebraska Humane Society are incredibly lucky to have Baxter Subaru in their corner. The dealership has been an active partner of the shelter, sponsoring our Walk for the Animals and encouraging their employees to participate.  The “Walk” is our biggest annual fundraiser and allows everyone, from runners and joggers to cat nappers and couch potatoes, the opportunity to help homeless animals. Walking with our dogs is so simple, but it strengthens the human-animal bond, and allows our entire community to engage and be a part of our mission. In 2017 Baxter furthered their commitment to help animals by offering a memorial for a little abused dog who was, coincidentally, named Baxter.  The Baxter memorial fund will continue to help animals on a yearly basis. Our goal is to rescue and return, or rehabilitate and rehome, animals who need a second chance.  With Baxter Subaru’s support, we are making that happen. We offer up a huge tail-wag of thanks to Baxter Subaru for their love promise in championing the cause of homeless animals in Omaha, Nebraska.

Who We Are

The Nebraska Humane Society is a private non-profit organization that rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes thousands of animals each year.  We also provide animal control services to Omaha and Sarpy County. As an open entry shelter we take in all lost, abandoned, unwanted and mistreated pets who have nowhere else to go. We work to return the lost, heal the sick and whenever possible, adopt the homeless. Toward that end we treat diseases, set broken bones, stitch up wounds, spay or neuter, microchip, and offer behavior help for scared and unruly dogs. We also work to keep pets in homes by educating pet owners, providing training and free behavior help, and promoting responsible pet ownership. Read More »

Where Your Money Goes

The Nebraska Humane Society is a private non-profit corporation that relies on private donations. We do not receive tax dollars, nor do we receive any portion of dues or donations paid to national animal welfare agencies.  We rely on funding from individuals, corporations and foundations to support the cost of sheltering tens of thousands of animals annually, our animal medical program, animal care facilities, adoption counseling, pet training and our behavior modification program: The Molly Project. NHS also works to generate income through our adoption fees, our Animal Outfitters retail store and services such as training classes, humane education camps, and private pet cremations. With community support we can continue this lifesaving work.
